About Crests
This section is about crests in-universe. You are free to skip it and jump right into building your character's crest!

"Crest" is the name given to the floating shape or symbol that is present above each browbird's head. They start to appear almost immediately after a browbird takes their first breath. As a browbird grows older, their crest will take on make shapes and colors, sometimes shifting by the day. It finally settles on a single, unchanging form when they reach adulthood at the age of 20.
Crests can not be grabbed, moved or interacted with by an outside force, they are also able to pass through objects like little ghosts. They are always positioned above the browbird's head and will usually give off a fairly dim glow, but with a little effort it can become much brighter and be used as a light source in dark places.
It's possible to stick your hand in one, and if you were to do that it would feel warm and send little tingles up your arm. If a crest ever feels too hot or too cold, it can be a sign of depression, physical illness, and other things.
While an adult browbird's crest will not change shape drastically like a juvenile browbird's, it will still shift and flicker slightly depending on the browbird's emotions. Many browbirds passively will watch another browbird's crest for slight movements, and it's one of the many ways they understand each others emotions and communicate to one another, like another form of body language.
Browbird crests are a visual manifestation of a browbird's soul and aura. They serve as a core of energy that the browbird can focus on to draw from when using their magical abilities. This means that when a browbird uses magic or has a magical effect on their body, it will always include at least one color from their crest. An example of this would be if a browbird had a blue crest and used fire magic, their fire would be a similar shade of blue. Another example is glowing markings, which often show up in the color of the browbird's crest. This being the case, it means only browbirds with black crests, white crests and gray crests are able to have magic or glowing traits of those colors.
Crests do not extinguish until death, however they will grow smaller and dimmer if a browbird is elderly, ill, extremely weak, or close to dying. They also become small and dim if a browbird uses far too much magical energy, nearly draining their aura and putting their life at risk. Smaller fluctuations happen during daily life though, a browbird's crest will stutter and shrink if they are fearful, or flare if they are feeling fired up!
Additionally, browbirds actually have a popular form of divination concerning ones future, personality, and relationship compatibility that uses crest shape, aspects, and what birth cycle they hatched during. This process is called Celestiscope!

Creating a Crest
Keep in mind, the SHAPE of crest you choose CANNOT be changed later.
If you choose a flame crest, you will have to keep a flame crest on the design.
You will only be able to edit or add effects, particles, and colors.
There are plans to release special items that allow for slight changes to the crest's shape!

Crests are the shape or symbol that floats above the browbird's head. Every browbird has one.
★ The crest counts as only one trait in total, so you may stack as many crest traits as you'd like from the same rarity and lower rarities.
★ Example: If you have access to rare traits, you can combine a common shape with rare effects, this would make it a rare crest.
★ If your design has a common or uncommon crest it cannot be black, white, gray, or very dark. Crests naturally give off light and their color reflects the soul of the one using it, so they should almost always be brighter colors!
★ Crests can naturally have a very small amount of little sparkles and "dot" particles floating around and in them.
★ There are two main parts to a crest:
1. Shape --> The base shape of the crest. This represents your browbird's core personality.
2. Effect --> Modifiers to the base shape and/or color. These represent your browbird's magical potential.
Your crest will be the rarity of the whatever the highest rarity of the shape or effect is.
★ Keep in mind that the crest shape you choose cannot be changed later through normal design edits.
Be certain of which shape you want when designing your browbird. Particles, effects, and color may be able to be edited depending on the crest.
★ Masterlist Submissions
You do not have to include common effects on the masterlist submission.

Crest Color
A common or uncommon crest should always be a bright color. They give off light and must clearly show this!
Rare crests can optionally be dark colors, but still saturated. A dark crest will have brighter colors mixed in that still give off light.
Mythic crests can optionally be black, white, gray, and very washed out tones. They do not need to give off light.
Try to keep common and uncommon crests in the range shown below. You can go very slightly outside what is shown, but coverage should be kept to an absolute minimum.

Crest Effects
Effects are optional additions to a crest.
You can combine multiple crest effects, the entire crest only counts as 1 trait total.
For the examples in this section we'll be using the common flame crest, the common star crest, the common cloud crest, and the uncommon half-halo crest to offer variety in how each effect looks and how rarity changes.
This area is still a work in progress and will be updated further in the future.

Common Crest Effects
Common crest effects do not need to be included on the masterlist entry!
These effects can be added to any crest at any time regardless of rarity.

Dual toned crests are made up of two separate color groups, such as blue and orange like the example. They can be twisted, gradiented, or otherwised mixed together however you'd like! Browbirds who posses a dual toned crest are more likely to have an easier time learning their second magical aspect when it manifests!
Turnways crests are simply the crest turned upside down! Those with the turnways crest likely had a more difficult time learning their second aspect.

Uncommon Crest Effects
Blazing crests burn bigger and brighter than the rest. These are a sign of a browbird with a larger than average store of magic to draw from, though it can often times come out in larger bursts than intended and can be difficult to control.
Note: For "fire" styled crests, their flames will be much bigger than normal. For all other crest shapes, they will be instead surrounded in flames. Ex: A star star crest with blaze added to it would look like a star on fire. The shape of the fire can vary! Bubbling crests are surrounded with little bubbles of excess magic, and this usually suggests that the browbird is leaking small bits magical energy. They tire much quicker and will often times have a smaller than average pool of magic to draw from. Many bubbling crest browbirds have trouble controlling their magic from an early age. It is sometimes possible to overcome this shortcoming with lots of training and focus. Radiance crests are considered an evolution of the blazing effect. A more refined, controlled version of the excess power that a blaze brings. This effect surrounds the crest in a flat disc shape that appears like the one shown. This always shows behind the crest no matter the angle, and will always have the detail lines present. Ooze crests, however, are an evolution of the bubbling effect. Their magical energy would not "leak" as quickly as those with a bubbling crest experience, but they would experience a slower recovery time when it comes to replenishing magical energy. |
Rare Crest Effects
Starlit crests are filled with stars, constellations, and have a ridiculous excess of sparkles surrounding them. Those with crests such as these are often thought to have ancestral ties to the astral ancients.
Dark Crests are crests with a very distinct and odd dark coloration with a bright glowing 'rim' around them. These crests should still have some saturated color to them despite being darker, and should not be too close to black or dull crests, the example shown is about as dark and dull as they normally will get! Those with these crests are often thought to have ancestral ties to void ancients.
Prismatic Crests can have more than the normal two colors offered by a duel tone crest. They can shine in as many colors as you like, and it can manifest in many ways! Some examples are the one shown where the colors twist together, a gradient is also acceptable, as is a crest that just changes from solid color to solid color with mood or otherwise!
Huge crests can be far bigger than their more standard sized counterparts, normally maxing out at about double the size. Naturally, one with a huge crest would have an exceptionally large amount of magical energy to draw from. They're a regular crest... But bigger! The huge effect can also affect other effects, such as a huge radiance.
Crests larger than this would be mythic!

Mythical Crest Effects
White crests are associated with the purest form of the celestial aspects. It is said that only powerful celestial browbirds will have a crest that grows in bright, blinding white. It is thought that a white crest is a sign of a soul that has reincarnated countless times, and the passage through the dreamscape and back to the living world has eventually changed the soul to light itself.
Black crests are associated with a deep connection to the Abyssal Void and the void aspects that draw from it. They are thought to be the souls of those who in their passage between the layers of reality had gotten caught within the realm of Avys'karn which caused a permanent and striking change that will show up through reincarnation. It is a sign of strength and elegance that would likely turn heads. These striking crests do not actually generate their own light, instead a black crest will bend and distort light around itself to create the illusion of a glow.
Dull crests are those between the white and black crest, or possibly even a combination of the two. These are any crests that fall into duller ranges beyond dark crests, and these tones are often associated with advanced and rare magical diseases.
Note: Black crests do not mean evil souls and white crests do not mean good souls, and a gray wouldn't be in between. These tones have nothing to do with good/evil! They are instead very special colors that could be seen more as an omen for ones future, or a special connection to other planes.
The Parahelion effect can be observed around only the brightest of crests, and can often times be seen paired with a white crest. This effect causes bright halo rays and occasionally small, distorted 'mock' images of the crest and it's light around the halo's edges.
Thorned Crests can be seen constantly distorting, having thorns of various sizes emerging and retracting. Crests like this clearly show that the browbird has intense instability within their aura and soul, often brought on by intense magical trauma or an intense magical infusion while the crest was still forming. Those with these crests will have great difficulty controlling their intensely powerful magic and can be easily overwhelmed.

Crest Shapes
Common
Common crest shapes are a single, simple form with no holes and no extra parts floating around them.
Common crest shapes can be flat or three dimensional.
Common crests are always positioned centered, above the head and between the horns.
Shape should not vary much from what is shown, however smaller adjustments from the default and simple extra details on the crest are fine.

Uncommon
Uncommon crest shapes are often a single shape, but may sometimes have holes or very small, floating extras that are clearly part of the same crest.
Uncommon crests are always positioned centered, above the head and between the horns or encircling one or both horns depending on the crest.

Rare
Rare crest shapes take on a variety of different forms and can be somewhat more complex.
Some rare crests can have up to three small floating parts depending on the crest, see examples below.
Rare crests are often positioned directly above the head, but for some they may encircle the horns or float on either side of the head.
Shape should not vary much from what is shown, however smaller adjustments from the default and extra details on the crest are fine.
The x2 Crest can take on any crest shape from rare, uncommon, or common. Each of the two crests can be a different shape with different effects allowing for all sorts of combinations!

Mythical
Mythic crests are any shape not shown in any of the other categories, including more elaborate shapes with multiple floating parts.
Mythic crests can be above the head, on either side of it, or behind it. The crest cannot be placed on other parts of the body.
The x3 Crest allows for each crest to be a different shape from any rarity, and with it's own effects, allowing for even more combinations!
Extra details and textures are allowed for mythic crests!
You may make "hybrid" versions of mythic crests without using a x3 crest.
Mythic crests also account for any unlisted crest shapes in any other rarity.
keep in mind for unlisted crests that new ones may be added to other rarities in the future!

At this time, regular designs and MYOs can not have more than three crests.
Note: The only crests currently not usable as mythic shapes are crests in the shape of weapons, keys, crests that look like entire solar systems, clock crests, butterfly crest, and crests resembling the aspect emblems.

Crest Particles
Crest particles are a small, optional trait and can be added to the crest.
While these traits will be listed as an additional trait, they still count as part of the crest and will not count as extra rarities.
Up to two particles can be added to a crest by default, with crest particle items able to grant more.
Crest particles should...
Resemble the examples shown
Meet the crest color guidelines
Be small in comparison to the crest,
Not not look like separate crests or be confused for another crest style.
Be placed randomly within or around the crest
These particles are made entirely of magic and would not be something you could "move" or "pick up". The effects will usually sit on or float around with the crest and follow its flow. If one were to fall too far away from the crest, it would fade away.
Some effects can only be used if the browbird has a specific magical aspect.
Others are only obtained only through specific items.
